Program Notes
Commissioned by conductor Michael Gagliardo and the Etowah Youth Symphony Orchestra, TRIBUTE commemorates September 11, 2001; reflects upon the acts of valor that surfaced in its wake; and acknowledges the resilience and perseverance of human spirit. TRIBUTE was premiered by the Etowah Youth Symphony Orchestra on July 4, 2002, in Gadsden, Alabama, under the direction of Michael Gagliardo.
As a winner of the 2001-02 Aaron Copland Award, I composed TRIBUTE while in residence at Copland House in Cortlandt Manor, NY, where Aaron Copland lived and worked the last thirty years of his life. The music was composed in his spacious glass-walled studio between March 23 and April 27, 2002. With gratitude to Copland House and as my own "tribute" to Mr. Copland, the composer's initials A.C. are heard at the open and close of TRIBUTE as major chords on A and C, played by the strings; and echoes of Mr. Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man are used both rhythmically and melodically as structural motives.
With each performance of TRIBUTE that generates an ASCAP royalty, a $50 donation is made to the non-profit, non-political educational organization Seeds of Peace, This donation is made in the name of the performing orchestra.
