Comments and Reviews

...James Grant has provided us a lovely and challenging work that is accessible to a wider constituency without sacrificing musicality and technical demands... Sultry is at once identified as a tour-de-force “torch song” ballad that takes us back to the 1930’s with jazz harmonies and the movie icon of a woman singing in a glitzy evening dress while perched on a piano... the range (GG - f1) is somewhat conservative allowing even talented high school students, especially on the smaller F tuba,  to master this movement... Eccentric: the energy and interplay are intoxicating but it will require practice to tame this movement... Grant has penned another outstanding winner...

Program notes

SULTRY and ECCENTRIC for tuba and piano features the tuba in two distinctly different musical roles.  SULTRY is an expressive ballad in the spirit of the familiar jazz “torch song,” offering ample opportunity for the tubist to display warmth, melodic lyricism, and soul.  ECCENTRIC, on the other hand, requires considerable technical command as the tubist is faced with quirky leaps, nimble runs, and a relentlessly eccentric rhythmic and melodic palette.
