— PDF and AUDIO EXCERTPS —

The PDF and audio excerpts linked below are offered to help you assess whether this project is appropriate for you and your ensemble. As you'll read in the Project Proposal linked above, the Double Concerto also will be fashioned into two other versions:a recital piece for euphonium and tuba with piano accompaniment; and a recital piece for unaccompanied euphonium/tuba duo. In both of these versions, the (optioanl) euphonium/ tuba quartet called for in Mvt II of the full wind ensemble version can also make an appearance.

NOTE: the audio excerpts below are rough, unrefined (at times kind of ridiculous) MIDI renderings, offered here only to give a sense of the musical language and of the interplay of the solo instruments with the ensemble; there is no percussion; there are no dynamics and articulation. So please: fire up your imagination while listening and following along in the score.

Click on the AUDIO plugin first, then immediately on the PDF link, which will open in a new window;

Hello, and thanks for dropping in --

Over the course of the past year, Drs Kelly Thomas, Mark Nelson, Pat Stuckemeyer and I joined forces to design a comprehensive project to convene a group of Commissioners to commission from me a new work: a double concerto for euphonium and tuba designed specifically for use -- and plenty of re-use -- by advanced players of euphonium and tuba with university-level wind ensembles and tuba-euphonium quartet (optional, but desired). Above is a link to the formal project proposal, which contains a detailed description of all aspects of the consortium. Also linked above is a brief Sign-Up form as well as a direct link to Potenza Music, where you can sign up online.

The new work will be published and distributed exclusively by Potenza Music. The premiere of Double Concerto is scheduled to take place at the University of Arizona on March 25, 2012, and it will be a featured work at ITEC 2012, in Linz, Austria. Your sponsorship will be duly noted in all publicity and, of course, in the Potenza-published score..

We are all thrilled -- I am, especially so! -- to be working with you and many other good friends and colleagues to bring to life this new work for both the euphonium/tuba repertoire and the wind ensemble repertoire.

For those of you who are not familiar with my music, below you will find audio excerpts to other compositions that are relevant to the project at hand.

Please don't hesitate to contact Kelly, Mark, Pat or me if you have any questions about this project — we all hope it becomes your project, too. The Consortium is open to join through March 15.

Best regards — and I look forward to working with you in the coming months.

- Jim Grant
